ALBION CRICKET CLUB (Inc) 1st 11 (Eagles) v Otago Country on Sat 01 Oct 2011 at 11:00am
ALBION CRICKET CLUB (Inc) Won by 7 wickets

Match report October 1 saw the much anticipated 2011/12 cricket season opener as a seasoned Albion Eagles unit took on a talented Otago Country side at the holy grail of Dunedin cricket, Culling Park. Dunedin turned on the sunshine for the occasion meaning both sides were eager to get their campaigns underway.

The morning kicked off with the traditional game of touch with the curly head boys getting up via a late intercept from a Jamie Glenn pass. Clearly his time in England doing nothing to dispose of his false notion that he has some sort of play making ability. Stick to the fat mans track Jamie.

The coin toss, always of vital importance in a limited overs fixture, was lost by Eagles skipper Shaun Haig and the boys in red were put into the field. A solid start was made by the Country openers with Brayden Hill showing good early season touch making his way through to 51 in good time. At the 15 over mark Haig called on club journeyman Nick Beard to make a dent into the Country batting order. Beard answered his captain's call taking to the country batting line up like a fat kid would cake. Beard finished with the impressive figures of 6-11 off his 5.4 overs in one of the more memorable bowling spells seen at the nest in recent memory. Country bundled out for 109 in the 30th over.

The premature finish meant that Albion were to negotiate a niggly 12 over period prior to lunch. Looking to go out with a positive approach, openers Haig & Glenn got the Eagles off to a good start with some vintage cricket strokes. Glenn must have smelled the savouries being heated up as he was bowled for 27 when he missed a straight one. This left the home side at 58/1 at the luncheon interval.

Lunch went down a hit as always with the above mentioned savouries and caramel slice being popular however there was a notable absence of raspberry buns from the table.

Albion went out after lunch with only 40 runs to knock off which they did comfortably inside 25 overs, Albion taking the game by 7 wickets.

All in all a clinical performance first up by the red & blacks and a good start to the season which they will be looking to carry on next week against the boys from the swamp.
